The way you start your day has a huge impact on how the rest of your day goes. Building a morning routine that you follow most days can set you up for success and a positive attitude that helps carry you through happier and more productive days. And who doesn’t need more of that?

Five Practices to Add to Your Morning Routine

If you’re not sure how to get started, simply tack on one new activity, and build as you go. Choose actions that work best for you. And before you know it, you’ll be on your way with a morning routine that cascades into energy and enthusiasm for the rest of your day. Try any of the following:

  1. Don’t hit snooze. It may feel relaxing to stay in bed for a few extra moments, but this can actually hurt your momentum for the day. Instead, set your alarm for a wake time you can stick to, and get yourself out of bed. You’ll feel that you’ve already accomplished something for the day, and you’ll have more time to get through your morning without rushing (and having to leave out important steps!).
  2. Work out first thing. You don’t have to run a marathon at 6 AM (unless you want to!). Your workout can be as simple as walking your dog around the block or lifting weights for 10 minutes. Anything that gets your heart beating and your blood flowing—helping to wake up your body and mind. Plus, you can cross another accomplishment off your list for the day, which is very satisfying.
  3. Meditate. This helps you frame your mindset for the day and manage anxiety and stress. It can also help to improve your overall happiness through a sense of mindfulness and connection to the world around you. It can help to use an app or website to guide your meditation. Just five minutes will do! Find a quiet spot to sit down, close your eyes and gain your daily focus.
  4. Keep a gratitude journal. A great way to start the day on a positive note is by jotting down 3-5 things you’re thankful for in your life. They can be simple or specific. As the days go on and your list grows, you’ll see how much you have to be happy about!
  5. Eat something (and include coffee). Like your muscles, your brain needs food for energy to work well. The best choice for breakfast is something with lean protein and high fiber—for example, wheat toast with peanut butter or eggs with a side of fruit. And if you’re a coffee drinker, have a cup. Just don’t overdo it, since that can make you jittery.

Start small when building your morning routine by choosing just one new action. You’ll soon find your days transformed as your outlook improves!
