Should You Talk to a Recruiter Even If You’re Not Actively Looking for a Job?

Life is going well: you love your job, you get along with your coworkers and you’re not in search of something new. But then, you’re contacted by a recruiter with information about a job opportunity that you’re qualified for. Your first instinct may be to delete the email and carry on with your day.

Is this the right choice? Should you talk to a recruiter even if you’re not looking for a job right now?

The short answer? Yes. Every time.

Why? Because unless you’re able to predict the future, one thing is certain: we never know what tomorrow may bring. Your company may be acquired by another, larger company. You could suddenly find yourself with a new boss you don’t get along with or your position could be terminated. Or… completely different from that scenario, you could simply find yourself bored with what you’re doing and wishing you worked somewhere else. The fact is, you never really know what the future can hold and that is exactly why it’s a good idea to talk to a recruiter.

You never know what a recruiter is going to tell you about

Until you answer the email or pick up the phone, you really have no idea what job lead the recruiter may have. It could be for an exciting opportunity in an industry you’ve always wanted to work in, or for a company you’ve always wanted to work at. It could be something that’s within your field, but a little different that sounds interesting. Maybe it’s for a salary level you never dreamed you could earn, but in a different job market that pays higher than where you currently work. The fact is: you just never know!

Always answer a recruiter’s email

Best case scenario: it leads you to an amazing new job! Worst case scenario: you’re not interested in the job, but now you have a valuable professional contact at a staffing agency, who can keep your resume on file if anything else comes up. And that’s a great connection to make in the working world!
