Start Interviewing Your Interviewer with These Questions

You deserve a great job, but does that job deserve you? In a perfect world, all companies would be well-run, with managers who treat staff members as family and job roles that allow you to learn and grow. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. That’s why it’s important to treat your job interview as a chance to introduce yourself to a potential employer, as well as learn more about the company and the position. By asking three smart questions, you can help yourself make a wise post-interview decision about the job.

Ask These Three Questions During Your Interview

You can learn more about the company, the position and your potential employer when you ask the following:

  1. Who had this position before now? This question can help you learn a lot more about the job to which you’ve applied. Is it a newly created position? If so, you may be able to help develop it along the way, while learning many new things and showing your leadership and initiative. If it’s a current position, did the person who had it before now grow in his or her career and get promoted to something else? Or did he or she not do so well and leave the company, or worse, get fired? You’ll be able to learn a lot from those who have gone before you, and this can help you decide if you want the job or not.
  2. What problem will this position help the company solve? Employers create new positions and hire new staff to help solve problems within the company. Asking this question can help you in one of two ways. First, you’ll get a better understanding of what will be expected of you and if it’s more than you feel comfortable handling. Second, if you decide you’re interested in the job, you can explain to the hiring manager how your unique skills and experience can help the company solve its problem.
  3. What is your management style? No one wants to work for a callous employer who dreams of dollar signs and treats employees with very little respect. So let this question help define what your manager is like. Does he or she take the question seriously and give a thoughtful answer? If so, you may have found a great new company to work for.

Remember to treat the interview as if you expect to land the job.

Even though you’re on a fact-finding mission, you’re also on the interview to impress your potential employer. Therefore, take your interview seriously. Be 15 minutes early, dress professionally and come prepared with a copy of your resume.

Your next great job opportunity is out there
