But by making some significant changes in your job search technique, you can increase your odds of finding a great new job in the New Year. Here’s what you can do.

  1. Establish yourself as unique. No doubt, your potential employer is sifting through a stack of resumes. You’ll need to make yourself stand out. Think of the skills, experience, knowledge and training you have that set you apart from the competition—and let that shine through in your cover letter and resume.
  2. Connect with an employer’s situation and offer solutions. When you apply for a job, Google the company, check out their website and press releases, etc. How might your unique skill set be used to help this potential employer? Include this information in your cover letter, and be prepared to discuss it during your interview.
  3. Keep your cover letter and resume brief. These documents should be straight to the point, feature benefits to the employer and only the most pertinent information. Hiring managers and recruiters are short on time. You want to capture their attention. Then, you can fill them in with plenty more information during your interview.
  4. Be careful with your online presence. Anyone can find just about anything on the Internet, including your potential employer. Don’t rely on your privacy settings to keep your information protected. Remove any questionable posts or photos.
  5. Use LinkedIn to establish your passion and individuality. As it offers more and more personalization features, LinkedIn is no longer just a virtual resume site. To maximize your online presence, use LinkedIn to showcase your projects, charitable endeavors and learning experiences.
  6. The more people you know, the more chances you’ll have to find out about job openings. On LinkedIn, join groups associated with your field and participate in group discussions. Attend trade shows, industry association meetings or scheduled meet-ups at your local chamber of commerce.
  7. Peruse Facebook and Twitter for job opportunities. Many companies now advertise job openings on social media sites. Check out the pages of companies you’d like to work for on a regular basis.
  8. Work with a staffing service. You can always put your career future in the hands of the experts! Staffing firms stake their reputations on finding candidates jobs they love, and placing clients with the best-matched employees for their job openings. Also, recruiters are often aware of job opportunities that may not be posted for the general public.
  9. Take your interview seriously. Always remember that first impressions can make or break your job opportunity. Therefore, view an interview not just as informational session; be prepared to land the job. Cover all the basics: show up 15 minutes early, dressed to impress, with a copy of your resume. Be prepared to talk about yourself and your accomplishments.
  10. Don’t forget to follow-up within 24 hours by email or thank you note. After an interview, be gracious and keep your name top-of-mind. Send a thank you email or drop a thank you note into the mail.
