Five Work Lessons You Can Be Thankful For

Upon retirement, what pearls of wisdom will you share with your younger colleagues? Sometimes it only takes one person or one memorable piece of advice to change our career outlook for the better. During this season of giving thanks, take a moment to reflect on a few on-the-job lessons you may have learned—or have yet to learn—along your career path.

Five Valuable Lessons to Inspire you in your career

If you’ve just entered the working world or if you’re well into your career, it can never hurt to be inspired. Consider the following tips to help you love your work and be great at what you do:

  1. Do what you love. It seems easy enough, right? If you are passionate about what you do, you’ll have no problem being successful at it. That’s because you’ll be excited to start each work day, complete tasks, collaborate with your team, dream up new ideas and ultimately be great at what you do. Choose your career based on your passion first, and let the money follow.
  2. Speak up. The workers who are brave enough to suggest change are the ones who often advance in their careers. Bosses are looking for problem solvers. If you have an idea for how to make a process, product or service better, say something.
  3. Do unto others. There’s no shame in treating your coworkers the way you’d like to be treated—with kindness and respect. After all, you may be the most talented person in the office, but if you’re difficult to work with, it won’t matter. You can help move your career forward by being nice. It’s as easy as that.
  4. Know when to move on. Don’t ever stick with a job you hate. You won’t be willing to give 110 percent, and your employer won’t have the opportunity to find the right person for the position. Of course, no job is perfect, and you need to take care of your bills and financial responsibilities. But if you hit a point where you feel you can’t take another day, move on. The right job is out there.
  5. Never stop learning. Keep yourself up to date with happenings in your industry. It can never hurt to arm yourself with new skills, either. If there’s something job-related you feel you need to know, read up on it or take a class. You’ll keep yourself sharp, as well as marketable.

A Little Wisdom can go a Long Way

Try the above tactics, or talk to someone you know about what motivates them at work. Finding the inspiration you need can make the difference in simply working, or loving what you do.
